Choose LED modules for channel letters by matching the exact module to the letter geometry, required appearance, electrical design, and installation environment. Before ordering, obtain a model-specific datasheet, an agreed layout, and a representative illuminated sample. A category name alone cannot establish suitability.
Start with the sign construction
Give suppliers a drawing that identifies letter depth, stroke width, overall dimensions, face material, and internal obstructions. State whether the sign is front-lit, halo-lit, or uses another arrangement. Include the mounting location, viewing conditions, and access available for installation and maintenance.
HansonLed's channel letter LED module catalog lists mini modules and modules with lenses. Use the catalog as a starting point, then ask which exact model fits the narrowest stroke and shallowest cavity in the sign.
Review optics and layout together
Beam angle is one selection input, rather than a complete spacing rule. Subject to the actual module optics and application, module spacing, distance to the face, internal surfaces, and face transmission can affect uniformity. Ask the supplier to explain the proposed layout for corners, narrow strokes, and larger illuminated areas.
If the design requires illumination from the side, review the edge-lit LED module category against the intended enclosure and optical arrangement. Do not substitute an edge-lighting layout for a backlighting layout without confirming suitability. Make a representative sample part of purchasing approval and record the accepted module placement and face materials.
Define power and wiring requirements
Request the selected model's operating voltage, rated electrical load, polarity, connection diagram, and permitted connection limits. Base power-supply selection on the documented installed load and the supply manufacturer's loading and environmental requirements. Avoid applying one category-page specification to every module offered within that category.
Depending on the datasheet and installation, the electrical review may also need to address cable length, conductor sizing, voltage drop, protection, and power-feed locations. Have the responsible installer confirm the design against project requirements. Module selection and power distribution should be reviewed together before the layout is released.
Separate RGB color mixing from pixel control
For whole-module RGB control, the module's red, green, and blue channels mix to create its displayed color; modules connected to the same control zone typically follow that zone together. This does not establish individually addressable control of each LED package or each module. Ask the supplier to identify the actual control unit.
HansonLed's RGB module catalog lists RGB and RGBW products. RGBW adds a white channel, while addressability is a separate question. For chasing effects or different colors at different positions, specify independently addressable RGB pixels and confirm how many LEDs each address controls. The pixel LED module page describes independently controlled module pixels; obtain confirmation of the controller interface, address grouping, data direction, wiring, and supported effects.
Check environmental suitability and documentation
State whether the sign will face rain, condensation, dust, direct sunlight, cleaning chemicals, or restricted ventilation. Request the selected module's documented protection rating and operating conditions. Assess connectors, cable entries, power supplies, and the enclosure separately; a module rating does not establish the protection of the assembled sign.
Where certification or compliance documentation is required, request records that identify the exact model and applicable scope. A company-level statement or a certificate for another product cannot establish coverage for the item being purchased. Also confirm mounting preparation, attachment methods, and thermal requirements against the selected datasheet and actual construction.
Practical purchase specification checklist
-

-
Appearance: Define white tone or color behavior, viewing conditions, and sample acceptance criteria.
-
Module identity: Record the exact model, dimensions, optics, datasheet revision, and approved alternatives.
-
Layout: Obtain module positions, quantities, connection routes, and treatment of difficult sections.
-
Electrical design: Confirm voltage, installed load, connection limits, power supplies, and wiring requirements.
-
Control: Specify whole-module RGB zones or independently addressable pixels, with controller compatibility confirmed.
-
Environment: Document exposure conditions and review protection throughout the assembled system.
-
Order approval: Retain the accepted sample, relevant compliance records, installation instructions, and agreed substitution process.
Frequently asked questions
How many LED modules does each letter need?
There is no reliable universal quantity. Ask for a layout based on the selected module, letter geometry, face material, and required appearance. Confirm the proposed quantity through a representative sample before extending the layout across the sign.
Can standard RGB modules produce chasing effects?
Modules sharing one RGB control zone generally change together. Chasing across separately controlled positions requires an appropriate control arrangement, such as independently addressable pixels. Confirm address grouping and controller compatibility rather than relying on the RGB label.
What should buyers approve before a bulk order?
Approve the exact model and datasheet, layout, electrical design, control behavior, and representative illuminated sample. Record any required model-specific documentation and agree how substitutions will be reviewed. This gives purchasing, fabrication, and installation teams the same acceptance reference.
