  1. Beam angle and optics. A 160° wide-angle module is forgiving in shallow letters. A 120° module can leave dark edges unless spacing is tight. Lens modules can punch light deeper into tall returns or push it toward a back wall for halo effects.
  2. Luminous flux matched to letter depth. A 30 mm deep letter needs less throw than an 80 mm deep letter. Pairing a low-flux module with a deep letter produces a dim center; pairing a high-flux module with a shallow letter creates hotspots.
  3. IP rating for the environment. Indoor letters can live with IP20 or IP54. Outdoor face-lit letters in rain and dust need at least IP65. Coastal or freezer applications should move toward IP67 or IP68.
  4. Color temperature and bin consistency. Two modules rated 6500K from different batches can look visibly different through white acrylic. Reputable suppliers bin their LEDs and ship matched lots.
  5. Thermal design and rated lifespan. Heat is what degrades LEDs. A module with a poor thermal path may claim 50,000 hours but fail much sooner in a sealed metal can. Ask for operating-temperature range and lumen-maintenance curves, not just marketing numbers.

Match the Module Type to the Letter Style

  • Certifications. CE, RoHS, and UL are table stakes for global sign projects. PSE matters for Japan, Reach for Europe.
  • Customization capability. Can they adjust cable length, connector type, voltage, or CCT for your standard letter builds? Custom packaging and labeling are also valuable if you ship kits to installers.
  • Sample policy. A supplier unwilling to send samples for testing is a supplier hiding something. Test the sample under your actual letter conditions before committing to a container.
  • Technical support. Questions about spacing, power supply sizing, or voltage drop should get a prompt, knowledgeable answer, not a generic brochure.
