Two interior designers are asked to light the same hotel reception desk. One chooses a standard SMD strip and then searches for a deep aluminum channel thick enough to hide the LED dots. Why the "Dot Problem" Matters in Visible Installations

Standard SMD LED strips place individual diode packages at intervals along a flexible circuit board. When the strip is hidden inside a cove or behind a valance, the spacing rarely matters. But when the light source is visible — inside a glass display case, along the edge of a mirror, behind a translucent stone panel, or inside a shallow shelf recess — those intervals become bright dots separated by darker gaps. Density and Brightness

COB strips are typically described by chips per meter. Densities such as 320, 384, or 480 chips per meter are common. Higher densities generally produce a smoother beam and higher output. For purely decorative accent lighting, a lower density may be enough. For task areas or commercial displays, higher density is usually better. Compare strips by luminous flux per meter rather than by total reel lumens, because a long reel can hide weak per-meter performance.

Color Temperature and CRI

Warm white around 2700K–3000K suits hospitality and residential spaces. Neutral white around 4000K–5000K works for offices and task lighting. Daylight around 5000K–6500K is common in retail and workshops. Where color accuracy matters — skin tones, food, merchandise — look for a high Color Rendering Index, ideally 90 or above.

Voltage and Power Supply

Most COB strips run on 12V or 24V DC. For visible installations with longer runs, 24V is usually the better choice because it suffers less voltage drop, keeping the light consistent from one end to the other. Always match the power supply voltage to the strip rating exactly. A 24V supply connected to a 12V strip will overdrive the LEDs and can damage them.

Size the power supply by multiplying the strip's wattage per meter by the installed length, then adding about 20 percent headroom. A power supply running at full load runs hot and shortens its service life.

IP Rating for Wet or Outdoor Locations

For dry indoor visible installations, IP20 is sufficient. For bathrooms, kitchens, or covered outdoor areas, IP65 offers splash protection. For direct rain or temporary immersion, look for IP67. For pools, fountains, or submerged installs, IP68 is required. Even a waterproof led strip lights rating only protects the strip itself — cut ends and connectors must still be sealed properly.

What to Ask Before You Source

Visible installations leave no room for inconsistency. When evaluating led strip light manufacturers, ask for evidence beyond the marketing page:

  • Chip source and phosphor process — A manufacturer that cannot explain its supply chain is unlikely to deliver consistent color from batch to batch.
  • Color binning and CRI verification — Request binning codes and CRI test reports, especially for white COB strips.
  • Voltage tolerance — Confirm the strip operates within spec across the full input range.
  • Certifications — CE, RoHS, UL, and PSE markings matter for different export markets. ISO9001 indicates a documented quality system.
  • Customization — Can the supplier cut reels to length, adjust color temperature, or provide OEM labeling for your project?

Reality check: The lowest price is rarely the cheapest option on a visible installation. A color shift between two reels, or a batch that does not match the sample, can force a complete reinstall. It is better to pay a few percent more for a supplier with documented controls than to replace a failed run.
