How to match the right linear LED technology to your channel letters, light boxes, and commercial displays.

Two rolls of LED strip arrive at the same shop. One is built with SMD chips, the other with COB. Both run on 24 V, both claim high CRI, and both promise long service life. Yet the finished sign on the wall tells a different story: one glows as a dotted line of hot spots, the other washes the channel letter with a seamless ribbon of light.

That difference is not a defect. It is the difference between two packaging philosophies.

What COB and SMD Actually Mean

SMD stands for Surface Mounted Device. In an SMD LED strip, individual packaged LEDs—commonly 2835, 3528, 5050, or 2216—are soldered onto a flexible printed circuit (FPC). Each diode is a discrete point of light, spaced at regular intervals along the tape.

COB stands for Chip on Board. In a cob led strip, bare LED dies are bonded directly to the FPC and then encapsulated under a continuous layer of phosphor and silicone. The result is a continuous, dot-free emitting surface rather than a string of individual LEDs.

Both share the same foundation: a polyimide FPC, copper traces, and an adhesive or mounting channel. The divergence is in how the light is generated and presented.

How They Perform on the Wall

Light uniformity is the first thing a sign maker notices. SMD strips produce visible points of light unless diffused by a deep channel or a frosted lens. COB strips spread light across the entire width of the tape, eliminating the dotted look even in shallow channels.

Color rendering depends more on the chip and phosphor quality than on the package itself. Both technologies can reach Ra > 80 or 90. Because COB spreads phosphor continuously, slight color shifts across a batch can be harder to spot than on SMD strips, where individual binning differences are visible.

Luminous efficacy historically favored SMD in premium lines optimized for energy regulations. SMD strips can be engineered for very high lm/W because each diode is independently optimized and the optical path is short. COB strips trade a small efficiency margin for the gain in uniformity and glare control.

Bending and cutting both remain flexible, but SMD strips are typically easier to cut at marked intervals. COB strips can be cut as well, though the cut points and minimum bend radius depend on chip density and encapsulation thickness.

Thermal behavior favors COB in some respects. The bare die sits closer to the copper substrate, so heat spreads more evenly. SMD relies on heat moving through the plastic package first. In practice, both need adequate aluminum channel or heat-sink support for long runs at full power.

Where Each Technology Wins

Choose SMD when:

  • The project needs maximum luminous efficacy and the lowest energy cost.
  • You want precise control over cut points and segment length.
  • The channel is deep enough to hide diode spacing, or visible dots are part of the design.
  • You are matching an existing installation that already uses SMD strips.
  • Budget is tight and the application is functional rather than aesthetic.

Choose COB when:

  • The channel is shallow or the strip is visible to the viewer.
  • You need a soft, glare-free surface for hospitality, retail, or architectural accent lighting.
  • The application is a backlit sign, cove, or display case where hot spots would ruin the effect.
  • You need high-density output in a narrow width.

For signage work, COB strips have become the default for face-lit channel letters and slim light boxes where the tape sits close to the diffuser. SMD strips remain the workhorse for edge lighting, large coves, and any place where cost-per-lumen drives the decision.

What B2B Buyers Should Verify

Whether you source a cob led strip or an SMD equivalent, the same procurement checks apply:

  1. Voltage and power per meter. A 24 V strip usually carries current farther than a 12 V strip before voltage drop becomes visible. Confirm the driver match and derating for long runs.
  2. IP rating. IP20 is fine for dry indoor channels. IP65, IP67, or IP68 are needed for outdoor signs, bathrooms, or refrigerated displays. Ask how the rating is achieved—coating, sleeve, or full extrusion—and whether the method affects flexibility or heat dissipation.
  3. Color consistency. Request a binning code or color-tolerance step. This matters when multiple reels are used on one sign.
  4. Substrate quality. Two-ounce or heavier copper reduces voltage drop and improves reliability in high-power reels.
  5. Certifications. For exports to North America, Europe, or Japan, look for UL, CE, RoHS, PSE, and REACH documentation tied to the exact part number you are buying.
  6. Sample and reel-to-reel consistency. Order a production sample before the main reel, then compare the first and last reels of the batch under the same power supply.
