When the illuminated face is several meters wide, low-voltage systems need multiple power supplies distributed around the cabinet. High voltage modules can often be fed from a single point, cutting installation time and enclosure clutter.
Long linear runs
Channel letters and raceway lighting are usually short. But perimeter lighting, cove lighting, and long architectural outlines stretch the limits of 12V because voltage drop dulls the far end. Higher voltage keeps brightness more uniform over distance.
Outdoor installations with limited access
Every driver is a potential failure point. Fewer drivers means fewer trips up a ladder or inside a sealed cabinet. In wet, dusty, or hot environments, simplifying the electronics often improves reliability.
Cost-sensitive retrofits
If an existing sign already has mains wiring routed to it, AC modules can reuse that infrastructure. Adding low-voltage drivers sometimes means pulling new cable, adding enclosures, and paying for extra labor.
Where Low Voltage Still Leads
Shallow channel letters
Thin returns leave little room for heat dissipation or insulation. 12V modules run cooler and are easier to mount safely in tight spaces.
Indoor signs near people
In many jurisdictions, low voltage is preferred or required where the public can touch the sign. Class 2 circuits reduce shock risk and simplify code compliance.
Dimming and smart control
If the project needs DMX, DALI, 0-10V, or app-based dimming, low-voltage ecosystems usually offer more plug-and-play controllers.
Complex animations and pixels
Addressable effects are almost always built on low-voltage platforms. Keep DC for anything that chases, fades, or changes color in real time.
Safety and Certification Checkpoints
High voltage signage is not a place to cut corners. Because the modules connect to mains power, the installation must be handled by qualified electricians and inspected to local electrical codes.
Before you order, confirm the module has the right certifications for the destination market. Look for CE and RoHS for Europe, UL or ETL for North America, and PSE for Japan. For outdoor work, check the IP rating — IP65 and IP67 are common thresholds for dust and water protection.
