The two big categories — indoor and outdoor — look similar at a glance, but they are engineered for very different environments. Pick the wrong one and you may end up with flickering, dim, or even failed modules within a single season. An outdoor module, by contrast, must survive rain, dust, humidity, temperature swings, and direct sunlight on a facade, roof, or exterior light box.
A common mistake is to treat "covered but outside" as indoor. A canopy sign or a light box mounted under an eave still sees moisture, condensation, and temperature change. - IP44–IP54: splash-resistant modules for semi-exposed spots such as covered walkways, storefronts with a deep overhang, or spots where washdown may happen by accident.
- Outdoor (IP65 minimum): dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. This is the floor for fully exposed signage.
- IP67–IP68: resistant to temporary or even continuous immersion — a choice for areas prone to flooding, coastal zones, or underwater-installation needs.
For most outdoor signage and light boxes, an IP65-rated module delivers excellent value. When the installation site faces heavy rain, pooling, or salt-laden coastal air, stepping up to an IP67 or IP68 module is usually worth the extra cost.
3. Brightness and color consistency matter more outdoors
Outdoor signs compete with the sun. A module that looks bright in a store window can look washed out in daylight. Outdoor modules are built with higher luminous output and tighter binning so that brightness stays even across a large sign. If your sign faces strong direct daylight, look for modules that keep consistent color temperature and brightness across the whole facade rather than just picking the cheapest per-module price.
4. Waterproofing is built in, not bolted on
There are two very different ways modules resist moisture. A lightweight waterproofing treatment protects against surface moisture and high relative humidity, but it does not make a module safe for outdoor exposure. True outdoor protection comes from integrated waterproofing — silicone encapsulation, resin potting, or sealed housings with gaskets. That is why genuine outdoor modules are a distinct product line rather than an indoor module with a coating brushed on.

5. Working voltage: low voltage indoors, high voltage when you need it
Indoor signage is typically powered with safe low-voltage systems such as 12V modules, which are simple to wire and easy to run off a standard driver. Outdoor installations often benefit from high-voltage AC modules (110V, 120V, 220V, or 230V) that run directly from mains power. Choosing the right working voltage reduces the number of drivers you need and simplifies long cable runs across a large facade. Confirm the mains standard of your target market before you order so the module voltage and the power supply line up on day one.
6. Match the module to the sign type
The physical build of the sign also guides your pick. Channel-letter and shop-sign projects usually use compact modules that fit neatly inside each letter. Larger sign cabinets and light boxes call for high-brightness modules or rigid light bars that spread light evenly over the face. If you are building double-side or big-depth light boxes, dedicated high-power side-light bars give consistent illumination without hot spots. Choosing a module family that matches the sign structure is just as important as choosing the right protection level.
7. Plan for the whole system, not just the module
A well-protected module cannot make up for weak links elsewhere. Connectors, cables, drivers, and junction boxes all need to match the environment too. An IP67 module loses most of its value if it is wired to an indoor-rated connector that lets moisture creep in. For outdoor installations, use weatherproof connectors and junction boxes, seat all gaskets properly, and never block venting membranes on pressure-equalized modules.
8. Buy from a manufacturer who can back the grade up
The most reliable way to get a true indoor or outdoor module is to source from a real manufacturer with verified quality.
