Waterproof rating: match it to the environment

The IP rating tells you how well the module resists dust and water. For outdoor signage exposed to rain and humidity, IP65 is the baseline, and IP67 or IP68 is the safer choice for coastal areas, heavy rain, or high-humidity climates. Indoor signs can get away with lower ratings, but if there is any chance the sign will face weather, buy the waterproof version. It costs a little more up front and saves a costly rework later.

Driving mode: constant current vs constant voltage

Constant-current modules regulate the current flowing through the LEDs, so brightness stays stable along the whole chain and voltage drop has less effect. This is why high-quality modules can be connected in longer chains without the far end going dim. Constant-voltage modules are simpler and fine for short, low-power runs. For anything larger than a small sign, constant-current design is worth paying for.

Size and form factor
