3. Choose waterproofing by exposure level

- IP20 to IP54 – dry or lightly protected indoor use, such as reception logos or retail interiors.

- IP68 – continuous submersion or the harshest open-air conditions; use where water exposure is unavoidable.
Remember that the power supply and wiring also need matching protection. A waterproof module connected to an unsealed driver is still a service call waiting to happen.
4. Look at color, brightness, and beam control
Color temperature, color rendering, and luminous intensity shape how a sign looks to customers. Warm white around 3000K feels welcoming for hospitality brands. Cool white around 6000K reads crisp and modern for tech or automotive signs. RGB and addressable modules add animation and brand colors, but they also need compatible controllers and more careful wiring.
Brightness should match viewing distance and ambient light. A sign on a dark side street needs far less output than one competing with streetlights and headlights. Beam angle matters too. Narrow angles concentrate light for deep letters; wide angles spread light evenly across flat surfaces. Always request samples and test them in the actual installation environment before placing a large order.
5. Inspect the physical build quality
A reliable LED module is more than a cluster of diodes. The PCB material, solder mask, lens design, potting compound, and housing all affect longevity. Look for FR-4 or equivalent PCB substrates, consistent solder joints, and lenses that do not yellow or crack under UV exposure. Modules with proper thermal management run cooler, which is the single biggest factor in LED lifetime.
Dimensional consistency matters as well. Modules that vary in thickness or mounting-hole spacing create alignment problems during assembly and cause uneven lighting. Ask your led module supplier about production-line controls, aging tests, and how they handle binning for color and forward voltage.
