Walking strips, grazing beams, and clean linear accents that trace the edges of a structure all depend on one quiet workhorse: the LED rigid bar. Yet choosing the right one is surprisingly easy to get wrong, because a bar that works beautifully in a slim indoor cove can fail within months on an exposed exterior wall. This guide breaks the selection down into practical steps, so you can match the fixture to the facade instead of guessing.

Step 1 — Sort out how the light will actually be used

Facade lighting with rigid bars generally comes down to two jobs, and each one calls for a different product. Side lighting pushes light across the face from the edge, which is ideal for washboards, shallow lightboxes, or panels where you want a smooth even glow without a visible source. Back lighting sits directly behind a translucent panel or lens and creates the bright, uniform luminance you see on large backlit signs and display cabinets. Getting this distinction right first saves you from buying a bar that is technically waterproof but optically wrong for the surface you are illuminating.

Step 2 — Match the power source to the run length

Most facade bars run on low-voltage DC, typically 12V or 24V. On a long facade, low voltage suffers from voltage drop: the farther the bar sits from the driver, the dimmer and more colour-shifted the far end becomes. For short runs a 12V bar keeps driver costs low. For longer perimeter lines, a 24V bar halves the current for the same wattage, which reduces the drop and lets you power more length from a single source. If the facade has tall or deep cavities, look for high-power bars designed with a constant-current architecture, which hold brightness steady along the entire profile rather than fading toward the end.

Step 3 — Check the ingress protection rating honestly

An exterior facade is exposed to rain, dust, condensation, and even ice. This is where the IP rating does the real work. For a covered soffit or an area shielded from direct spray, an IP65 bar is an honest match for the risk. For a fully exposed wall or a location that gets hit by driven rain, choose IP67 or IP68. Do not stop at the number printed on the label, though: what matters most is how the electronics are protected. A bar that is potted, with the LED circuit fully encased in UV-resistant resin or silicone inside the aluminum profile, will shrug off moisture that would creep into a cheaply sealed unit. A rigid bar earns its name precisely because its solid aluminum profile acts as a heat sink. It pulls heat away from the chip so the LEDs can be driven at higher power without degrading. When you compare quotes, ask what the housing is made of and how the bar sheds heat, because a plastic-bodied bar that looks like a rigid bar on the outside will not survive on a real facade.

Step 6 — Plan the installation before you order

Sealing the gaps between bars is where facade installations usually fail. A fully IP68 bar is pointless if the joint between two lengths is left open to the weather. Specify the matching waterproof connectors and, if you splice wires on site, seal them with adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing. It also helps to confirm the mounting method: aluminium-bodied bars mount with clips or brackets, and a slightly recessed fixture hidden behind a cornice or lip looks cleaner and avoids glare. Budget for this labour and hardware line-item, because it decides whether the system lasts a few months or a decade.

Step 7 — Verify the source before you commit volume

Whether you are an architect specifying fixtures or a contractor buying in quantity, the manufacturer behind the product matters as much as the spec sheet.
