Spacing and output rules

Best for deep cabinets and retrofit work. Modules mount in rows across the back panel and provide even backlighting when spaced correctly. A light box LED module grid is familiar to most installers and easy to maintain.
Best for medium to deep cabinets where you want faster assembly. LED rigid bars come in fixed lengths, often with built-in lenses, and can be mounted to the cabinet sides or back for side-lighting or back-lighting.
Best for shallow cabinets, edge lighting, and curved surfaces. LED strips are thin, cuttable, and versatile, but they need clean mounting surfaces and careful thermal management in enclosed boxes.
Side-lighting vs. back-lighting
For cabinets thinner than about 5cm, side-lighting with rigid bars or edge-lit modules is usually the better choice. The light travels across the box and reflects off a white interior, creating even illumination without visible module shadows. For deeper cabinets, back-lighting with modules or rigid bars mounted on the rear panel is simpler and often more cost-effective.
Under 5cm depth: consider side-lighting bars or edge-lit modules. Over 5cm depth: back-lighting modules or rigid bars are typically easier to install and maintain.
Avoid the Low-Cost Trap
One of the most common mistakes in sign lighting is choosing the brightest, lowest-cost module without counting the full system cost. A cheaper module may force you to add extra power supplies, run more cable, or accept higher failure rates. Outdoor and Harsh Environments: IP Ratings and Materials
Outdoor signs face rain, dust, temperature swings, and UV exposure. The module housing, lens material, and sealing method matter as much as the LED chip itself.
- IP65: Protected against dust and low-pressure water jets. Suitable for most outdoor channel letters and cabinets.
- IP67: Protected against dust and temporary immersion. A good choice for signs in wet climates or near ground level.
- IP68: Protected against dust and continuous submersion beyond 1 meter. Use for marine, fountain, or extreme exposure applications.
Also pay attention to the operating temperature range. A sign in a cold climate needs modules rated for startup at low temperatures, while hot climates need good thermal design to prevent lumen depreciation.
