Example: A light box uses 12 LED rigid bars rated at 2.4 W each.

12 × 2.4 W = 28.8 W
28.8 W × 1.15 = 33.1 W minimum driver
Choose a 36 W or 40 W driver.

Step 3: Plan the Wiring — Series vs. Parallel

Parallel Wiring

Each segment receives full driver voltage independently. If one segment fails, the rest stay lit. This is the standard for LED modules and most rigid bars in channel letters and cabinets.

Series Wiring

Segments share voltage. A single failure can darken the entire chain. Use only when the product is explicitly designed for series connection, such as certain constant-current modules or long-run tape with built-in regulation.

• Label every run on the shop drawing before the sign leaves the bench.
• Use outdoor-rated cable for any wiring exposed to UV or moisture, even if the LEDs themselves are IP65+.
• RGB and RGBW tape need four-wire and five-wire runs respectively; do not mix them on the same controller output.

Step 4: Match IP Rating to the Environment

Remember that the power supply and junction boxes must match or exceed the IP rating of the light source. A waterproof strip connected to an open-frame driver is still a failed outdoor install.
