The "5050" name refers to the SMD chip footprint: 5.0 mm × 5.0 mm. Inside that package sit three separate dies — red, green, and blue. Because all three colors are housed in one chip, the 5050 package is the standard choice for analog RGB and RGBW strips used in commercial lighting.

By adjusting the current through each die, a controller can mix up to 16.7 million theoretical color shades. In practice, the usable range depends on controller PWM resolution and LED quality, but it is more than enough for signage, mood lighting, and branded color washes.

Key point for buyers: A 5050 RGB LED strip is not the brightest option on the market, but it offers the best balance of color range, cost, and availability for most commercial projects.

RGB, RGBW, and Addressable: Which One Fits the Job?

Not every color project needs the same strip. Buyers should match the technology to the application:

  • 24 V DC: Cuts every 6 LEDs (~10 cm). Lower current, less voltage drop, better for long storefront or architectural runs.

Always match the power supply voltage to the strip rating. Feeding 24 V into a 12 V strip overdrives the LEDs and can cause overheating or premature failure.

LED Density and Diffusion

A 5050 strip at 30 LEDs/m will show visible hotspots unless it is hidden inside a deep channel. For commercial work where the strip may be partially visible, 60 LEDs/m is the practical minimum, and 120 LEDs/m is preferred when paired with a diffuser. Higher density draws more power, so the power supply must be sized to the actual reel length plus at least 20% headroom.

Analog 5050 RGB strips use PWM controllers wired between the power supply and the strip. Addressable strips use data controllers and are not dimmed through the power supply. For any strip that will appear on camera — retail displays, broadcast sets, social-media backdrops — choose a controller with a PWM frequency of at least 1 kHz to avoid visible flicker.
