1. Start with the IP Rating, Not the Price

The first specification to lock down is the ingress protection rating. An IP rating tells you how well the strip seals against dust and water. For outdoor installations, IP20 is not acceptable. Bare boards might survive under a covered porch for a season, but rain, condensation, and pressure washing will eventually find a path inside.

12V strips work for short runs and small signs. 24V strips are the better default for outdoor work because the same wattage draws half the current, which cuts resistive losses and extends the single-feed run to roughly ten meters. For very long runs, the correct approach is power injection: running separate feeder lines to each segment rather than daisy-chaining the strip itself.

Air temperature is only part of the story. Dark decking, brick, stone, and metal cladding can run far hotter than the surrounding air under direct sun. A strip glued to a composite deck in summer can sit on a surface above the LED's rated junction temperature, accelerating degradation.

The practical responses are straightforward: route strips under eaves or in shade where possible, avoid direct contact with dark heat-absorbing surfaces, and use aluminum channels or profiles. A channel protects the strip mechanically, gives the install a finished look, and acts as a heatsink that pulls heat away from the diodes.

Heat softens the glue, water creeps underneath, and freeze-thaw cycles break the bond. For permanent outdoor work, use outdoor-rated mounting tape, screw-mounted clips in windy locations, or aluminum channels with end caps and diffusers.
