What SMD, COB, and CSP Actually Mean

LED strips are not a single product. The same flexible PCB can carry very different light engines, and the engine changes everything from beam quality to how the strip bends.

SMD (Surface-Mounted Device) is the longest-established format. Individual LEDs are soldered to the flexible board in packages such as 2835, 3528, or 5050. Buyers get a wide choice of brightness levels, colors, and price points, but the light comes from discrete points. COB (Chip on Board) places many tiny LED chips directly on the PCB and covers them with a single phosphor layer. No format wins every project. The right choice depends on the channel depth, viewing distance, budget, and whether the installation will be inspected up close.

Match the Strip to the Application

Channel letter outlines and sign perimeters. SMD strips remain the workhorse here. They are widely available in 12V and 24V, easy to repair in the field, and cost-effective for long runs. A rgb led strip in SMD format also lets sign makers switch brand colors without changing hardware.

Retail shelving and product displays. COB strips dominate this space. Shoppers stand close enough to see individual LEDs in a shallow shelf extrusion. The continuous beam of COB eliminates the dotted look and keeps product photography consistent.

Backlit logos and fabric light boxes. COB and high-density SMD both work, but the decision usually comes down to depth. In boxes under 50mm, COB gives more even diffusion. In deeper boxes, a well-spaced SMD strip can be more economical.

Narrow channels and curved features. CSP strips fit where other formats struggle. Their thin PCB and small bend radius make them suitable for tight aluminum extrusions, curved display fixtures, and detailed signage elements.

What Buyers Should Check Beyond the Chip Type

The chip format is only the starting point. The same COB strip from two different factories can perform very differently depending on how it is built. Before placing a bulk order, ask for the details that affect reliability.

  • Voltage and cut points. 12V strips usually cut every three LEDs; 24V strips cut every six. Match the voltage to your driver inventory and the cut frequency to the layout.
  • IP rating. Indoor retail can use IP20 or IP65. Outdoor signage, bathrooms, and marine applications need IP67 or IP68 with proper sealing at connections.
  • PCB width and copper weight. Narrow 5mm or 8mm strips fit compact profiles but need adequate copper to avoid voltage drop over long runs.
  • CRI and CCT tolerance. For product displays, CRI 80+ is a minimum; 90+ is preferable for premium retail. Ask for the MacAdam step or SDCM tolerance in writing.
  • Thermal management. Even efficient strips degrade faster when mounted on non-conductive surfaces without airflow. Ask the supplier for mounting guidance for your specific substrate.
  • Certifications for your market. CE and RoHS cover most of Europe; UL is expected in North America; PSE is required for Japan. Confirm the certificate scope matches the exact model you are buying.
