- Display cabinets. Jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, and museum cases need light inside frames that are often only millimetres thick. A 3 mm or 4 mm strip hides in the groove and keeps the focus on the product.
- Channel letters with tight returns. When the side wall of a letter is only 20 mm to 30 mm deep, a slim strip can sit on the return without blocking light or complicating assembly.
- Slim light boxes. Backlit posters and menu boards in airports, malls, and quick-service restaurants use narrow strips along the frame edge to keep the overall depth minimal.
- Shelf and showcase edge lighting. Linear light along the front lip of a shelf needs to be discreet during the day and uniform after dark.
- Architectural coves. Designers sometimes specify a reveal of only a few millimetres; a wide strip would be visible or require a larger plaster recess.

1. PCB width versus LED density. A 3 mm strip with LEDs spaced too far apart will look dotted, not continuous. Ask for the LEDs-per-metre count and check a physical sample under power.
2. Copper weight. Narrow boards have less room for traces. Heavy copper foil, 2 oz or 3 oz, reduces voltage drop over long runs and keeps both ends of the strip equally bright.
3. LED package and binning. 2835 and 2216 chips are common in narrow strips. Consistent colour temperature depends on tight binning; poor binning leads to a patchy look across a display.
4. Colour rendering. For retail displays, look for CRI 80 or higher. For jewellery, cosmetics, or artwork, CRI 90+ is usually worth the small premium.
5. Ingress protection. Dry display cabinets can use IP20. Retail environments with cleaning routines or outdoor signage need at least IP65, and submerged or heavily washed locations need IP67 or IP68.
6. Cut intervals and mounting. Smaller cut units give more flexibility on site, but they also affect how the strip is wired. Confirm whether the strip comes with 3M adhesive, mounting clips, or a matching aluminium channel.
Specifying for Voltage Drop and Run Length
Every metre of copper adds resistance. On a narrow strip with long runs, the far end can be noticeably dimmer than the beginning. The standard fix is to power the strip from both ends or to add parallel feed points every few metres. When you plan the job, ask the supplier for the maximum recommended run length at your operating voltage, 12V or 24V, and whether the strip is designed for single-end or dual-end feeding.
