When a project moves outside, into a bathroom, or onto a boat, the weakest point of the lighting system usually determines how long it lasts. Waterproof LED strip lights solve this by sealing the circuitry and connections against moisture, dust, and corrosion. Brightness, color temperature, and cut marks get most of the attention during specification. But in wet or dusty environments, the enclosure is what keeps the strip alive. Water wicks into solder joints, corrodes copper traces, and destroys LEDs from the inside out. Dust and salt accelerate the process.
A non-waterproof strip in an outdoor sign cabinet may look fine for weeks, then fail section by section. The repair means removing the sign face, replacing the strip, and paying for labor twice. Specifying the correct outdoor LED strip lights upfront removes that risk.
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The rating comes from IEC 60529 and uses two digits. The first digit measures protection against solid objects like dust. The second digit measures protection against water.

The overall rating is only as strong as the weakest sealed point. A strip with IP68 silicone coating still fails if the end cap or power connector lets water in. Always review the full assembly, not just the strip body.
Manufacturers use several methods to protect LED strips. Each has a different cost, flexibility, and maximum protection level.
A thin layer of epoxy or conformal coating over the PCB. This is the lowest-cost option and typically reaches IP54. It handles light splashes and humidity but is not suitable for direct water exposure or long-term outdoor use.
The strip slides into a plastic or silicone tube, and the ends are sealed with glue. This reaches IP65 and works well for general outdoor signs and retail environments. The weak point is the manual gluing at the ends.
A silicone tube is extruded around the strip, and the end caps are machine-molded in a second process. This improves consistency and can reach IP66. It is a common choice for commercial facades and architectural outlines.
The strip is fully embedded in solid silicone. This blocks water pathways and can reach IP67 when combined with proper end sealing. It offers good UV and temperature resistance.
The highest grade uses thermoplastic polyurethane fully molded around the strip, including the cable entry. There are no separate end caps. This is the only construction that consistently achieves true IP68 for continuous submersion.
Backlit signs, channel letter outlines, and awning accents need IP65 as a minimum. Rain, condensation, and cleaning crews all expose the strip to water. For signs in coastal or industrial areas, IP67 adds a safety margin against salt and chemical exposure.
Bathrooms, kitchens, and refrigerated display cases benefit from IP65 strips. The protection is not just about water; it also prevents dust and grease from shortening the product life. RGB LED strips are popular in these spaces for color branding and mood lighting.
Boat decks, pontoons, pool edges, and fountain features need IP67 or IP68. Saltwater is especially aggressive, so the material must resist corrosion and UV degradation. TPU-molded strips are preferred here because they have no glued joints to fail.
Building outlines, bridges, and garden paths require strips that handle thermal cycling and direct rain. Solid silicone or TPU construction with UV stabilization will outlast basic tube-style strips in these applications.
A catalog photo does not prove waterproof performance. Before placing an order, confirm the following points with the LED strip manufacturer:
- Is the IP rating tested on the complete assembly, including connectors and end caps?
- What waterproof technology is used: coating, tube, extrusion, or integrated molding?
- What is the operating voltage and is it compatible with the intended driver and control system?
- Are customization options available for length, color, connector type, and packaging?
- Does the supplier hold relevant certifications such as CE, RoHS, UL, or ISO9001?

Even the best waterproof strip can fail if it is installed incorrectly. Keep these practices in mind:
- Do not cut waterproof strips unless you can reseal the cut with the correct end cap or adhesive.
- Mount power supplies and controllers in dry locations or inside rated enclosures.
- Avoid sharp bends that can crack the waterproof jacket and expose the PCB.
