  • Why might it fail?
  • What would happen to the product and the customer if it did?
  • How likely is the failure, and how easy is it to catch before it ships?

The team then scores each risk, decides which ones need action first, and puts controls in place to either stop the failure from happening or detect it early. A high RPN tells us a risk needs immediate action; a low one tells us the current controls are doing their job. This is what turns quality from a feeling into something we can measure and manage.

PFMEA vs. DFMEA: what is the difference?

PFMEA is one type of FMEA. Its close relative, DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), looks at the product design and asks whether the design itself could fail under stress. PFMEA looks at the process and asks whether the way we build the product could introduce a defect. For example, a DFMEA might ask whether a module's circuit layout could overheat, while a PFMEA asks whether our soldering profile could create weak joints.
