What is Total Harmonic Distortion (THD)?

In an ideal electrical system, the current drawn from the mains is a smooth, clean sine wave. In reality, most electronic devices, including the drivers that power LED modules, distort this waveform. THD is a measurement of how much an electrical device distorts the clean sine wave of the current it draws. It is expressed as a percentage, and the lower the percentage, the cleaner the power.

When a device draws current in sharp, irregular pulses instead of a smooth wave, it creates harmonic frequencies, which are currents at integer multiples of the mains frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz). For a 50 Hz system, the 3rd harmonic is 150 Hz, the 5th is 250 Hz, and the 7th is 350 Hz. These harmonic currents do not do useful work; they simply pollute the electrical system and waste energy.

Why do LED modules generate harmonic distortion?

The main source of harmonics in a lighting system is the LED driver. An LED driver converts AC mains power into the low-voltage DC power that LED modules need to operate. Most drivers are non-linear loads. Inside, a diode bridge rectifier only conducts current near the peaks of the AC sine wave, so the driver draws current in short, high-amplitude pulses instead of a smooth, continuous wave. These pulses are rich in harmonic frequencies. The more poorly designed the driver, the higher the THD of the module it powers.

Why does THD matter for signage installations?

A single LED module with high THD has a negligible effect on its own. But a sign cabinet or channel letter installation can contain hundreds or even thousands of modules, all connected to the same circuit. Their harmonic currents add up, which can lead to:

How is the THD test performed?

The test procedure is straightforward and repeatable:

Power the module at its rated voltage, such as 12V, 24V, or AC mains for high-voltage modules.

Connect the analyzer. A power quality analyzer, or a digital power meter with a THD function, is connected in series with the module.

Run the FFT. The analyzer performs a Fast Fourier Transform, which breaks the complex current waveform down into its individual frequency components.

Calculate THD. It is the square root of the sum of the squares of all harmonic magnitudes, divided by the magnitude of the fundamental frequency, multiplied by 100 to give a percentage.

Compare and record. The result is checked against the acceptance limit for that product series and logged for traceability.

What THD level is considered good?

For modern lighting equipment, a THD below 20% is generally considered acceptable, below 15% is good, and below 10% is excellent. Products with THD above 30% usually indicate a poorly designed driver with minimal filtering, and they can cause real problems in large installations.
