FPC quality. Double-sided FPC with adequate copper weight handles current and heat better than thin, single-sided boards. A thicker copper layer helps current flow evenly and reduces voltage drop on longer runs, while a double-sided construction improves mechanical stability when the strip is folded repeatedly.

Adhesive backing. 3M adhesive tape is the industry default for a reason. Confirm the tape is genuine and rated for the operating temperature of the installation. In hot climates or enclosed metal letters, cheap adhesive will release within months.

Voltage and cutting intervals. Common options are 12V and 24V. For channel-letter work, 24V is usually preferable because it reduces current draw and allows longer continuous runs before voltage drop becomes visible. Check the cut marks before you design your layout so you do not end up with a dark section at the end of a stroke.

IP rating. Indoor channel letters in dry climates can use IP20. If the letters face rain, humidity, or cleaning cycles, specify an encapsulated or sleeve-protected version. Do not guess — match the IP rating to the actual environment.

  • Epistar or equivalent brand chips, not unmarked reels

Installation Best Practices

Plan the fold path before peeling the backing. Once the adhesive touches the return wall, repositioning is difficult and can tear the FPC.

Fold the strip at the designated score lines only. Forcing a fold across an LED or resistor will eventually crack the joint.

Keep the power feed at the center of the letter when possible. This minimizes voltage drop to the farthest LEDs and keeps brightness even.

Use the correct power supply. Overdriving the strip shortens life; underdriving it produces uneven light. Match the driver to the strip's rated current and voltage.

Leave a small service loop at the entry point. Channel letters sometimes need re-lamping, and a few extra centimeters of strip make the work much easier.
