Beyond Brightness: How COB LED Strip Construction Affects Commercial Signage Durability

Two procurement managers receive COB LED strip samples on the same day. Both look bright in the office. Six months later, one installation still glows evenly inside a restaurant sign; the other has yellowed, lost adhesion, and started dropping pixels where humidity got in. The difference was never the LED chip alone. It was how the strip was built.

What a COB LED Strip Actually Is

COB stands for Chip on Board. Unlike conventional SMD strips, where individual LED packages are soldered across the flexible circuit board, a COB LED strip mounts the bare LED chip directly onto the FPC and then coats it with a continuous layer of phosphor-loaded silicone. The result is a single, seamless line of light rather than a row of visible dots.

That construction gives COB strips two immediate advantages for commercial signage: there are no visible hot spots, and the light-emitting surface is continuous even when the strip bends around tight corners or shallow channel letters. For brands that want face-lit logos without pixelation, the visual difference is obvious.

Why Construction Matters More Than the Spec Sheet

Most buyers compare luminous output, color temperature, and price. Those numbers matter, but they do not predict what happens after 18 months of outdoor heat, indoor grease, or repeated flexing during installation. The construction details decide that.

SMD waterproofing adds layers; COB waterproofing is the layer

Traditional SMD strips protect beads with secondary processes: glue dripping, glue injection, silicone sleeves, or PU tubes. Each interface is a potential failure point. Adhesive can yellow, sleeves can trap condensation, and injected housings can crack where the strip bends.

A well-built COB strip replaces those stacked layers with a continuous silicone coating or extrusion. The chip, bonding wires, and circuit are sealed in one step. That is why silicone-extruded waterproof LED strip lights tend to survive twisting, vibration, and temperature cycling better than traditionally potted SMD products in the same IP class.

The FPC is the backbone

The flexible printed circuit carries current, dissipates heat, and holds everything together. A thin or low-grade FPC will create voltage drop over long runs, uneven brightness, and solder-joint fatigue. Double-layer or thicker copper FPCs cost more upfront but reduce callbacks, which is where the real margin lives for sign contractors.

Density without discipline is just heat

High-density COB strips, commonly 480 chips per meter, look uniform because the chips are close together. But packing chips tightly also concentrates heat. Without a thermally conductive substrate and proper current regulation, the center of the strip ages faster than the ends. The sign looks great at handover and uneven after one summer.

A Five-Point Checklist for Bulk Buyers

Before you place a large order, ask your supplier to show evidence on the following points. Suppliers who answer with documents are usually easier to work with than suppliers who answer only with adjectives.

Coating process. Is the strip dipped, sprayed, or silicone-extruded? Extrusion generally gives the most consistent thickness and the best bond between silicone and FPC.
FPC specification. Request copper weight and layer count. Double-layer 2-ounce copper is a safe baseline for commercial runs.
IP rating evidence. An IP65 or IP67 claim should come with a test report, not just a product photo in a fish tank.
Color tolerance. Ask for the SDCM range. Three-step or tighter ensures different batches match when a project expands.
Cutting and reconnection. COB strips have specific cut points. Make sure the cut interval fits your fabrication process and that connectors are available.

The bottom line: A price list tells you what the product costs. The construction tells you what the product costs over its lifetime. Cheap strips are expensive when you have to return to the site.

When COB Makes Sense for Signage

COB strips are not the answer to every lighting job. They excel where the strip is visible or where the surface is shallow: halo-lit channel letters, exposed cove lighting, narrow display cases, and architectural accent lines. They also make sense in environments where maintenance is expensive, such as high ceilings, facade signs, or outdoor installations.

For deep cabinets or hidden backlighting, conventional SMD strips or a rigid LED rigid bar may still be the more cost-effective choice. The right product is the one that matches the application, not the newest technology.
