1. Look at the light, not just the strip

Power the sample and observe it against a neutral wall from several angles. A well-made COB strip should produce a uniform line without hot spots, shadow lines, or visible chip positions. Move your eye along the length: any repeating dark patch usually indicates uneven phosphor coating or poor chip placement. Slight variation across a single reel is common; strong variation every few centimeters is not.

2. Bend it gently

COB strips are often chosen for curved channels, lettering, or display cases. Bend the sample to the smallest radius your project requires and hold it for a few seconds. After releasing, check whether the phosphor surface has cracked, separated, or developed white stress marks. A reliable strip uses a flexible encapsulation that moves with the board rather than cracking against it.

3. Compare color at both ends

Connect the sample to the full length you intend to use and check the color at the beginning and the end of the run. If the far end looks noticeably warmer or dimmer, the strip has a voltage-drop or current-balancing issue. This matters especially on long runs where a single power feed is preferred for clean installation.

4. Inspect the cut points and pads

Clean copper pads at each cut point mean easier field installation and better solder joints. Burr-covered pads, loose resin, or inconsistent spacing suggest board fabrication was treated as an afterthought. In humid or outdoor environments, poorly finished edges become the entry point for moisture.

The Spec Sheet Details That Separate Professionals from Resellers

A reseller will hand you a bright sample and a low price. A real manufacturer will hand you a sample plus data that explains why the sample will match your bulk order. Before you commit, ask for the following:

Chip supplier and bin code: Reputable factories source known chip brands and control color binning across batches. Ask how bins are managed for repeat orders.
Phosphor type and thickness range: This affects color consistency and bending durability. A factory with process control can state the acceptable thickness range.
PCB copper weight: Heavier copper improves heat spreading and reduces voltage drop on long runs. The difference is visible in the pad thickness and flexibility.
Power tolerance: Strips that draw significantly more or less power than rated often indicate poor current regulation or inflated lumen claims.
Batch-to-batch consistency policy: Will the factory keep sample approval records and match future batches to that standard?

Waterproofing and Outdoor Claims

If your project needs waterproof led strip lights, do not rely on the IP rating alone. IP65, IP67, and IP68 describe test conditions, not lifetime guarantees. Request a small section of the waterproof strip, cut it at a marked point, and examine how the encapsulant meets the PCB. The best waterproof strips use an encapsulation that bonds to the edges of the board rather than simply coating the top surface.

Also confirm the temperature range and UV stability of the jacket material. A strip rated for outdoor use in Shenzhen may not survive a Minnesota winter or a Dubai summer unless the materials were selected for those conditions.
