Bending and installation
Because COB chips are smaller and distributed evenly, the strip can usually bend around tighter corners without creating dark patches or stressing solder joints. SMD strips can also bend, but aggressive bends can crack the diode packages or lift pads from the PCB.
Heat and density
COB strips pack more chips into each metre, which can mean more heat in a small area. A well-made strip uses a thicker copper PCB, quality adhesive backing, and sensible current design to keep temperatures under control. A cheap COB strip without these features can fail faster than a mid-range SMD strip.
Cost
COB strips generally cost more per metre than basic SMD strips because the manufacturing process is more complex. The price gap has narrowed over time, but for large, hidden installations where dot pattern does not matter, SMD remains the economical choice.
The short version: Choose COB when the strip will be visible or close to a diffuser and appearance matters. Choose SMD for long concealed runs, budget projects, or applications where raw lumen output per dollar is the priority.
Where COB LED Strips Make the Most Sense
Commercial buyers usually see the best return from COB strips in places where customers actually look at the light source:

LED density and chip quality

Voltage and cutting intervals
Most commercial strips run on 12V, 24V, or 220V. Lower voltage strips are safer and easier to install in small signs but suffer more voltage drop over long runs. Higher voltage strips suit large installations. Also confirm the cutting interval so you can plan lengths without wasting material.
