A 5mm strip fits where a 10mm strip cannot, but a narrow PCB has less copper to carry current and less surface area to dissipate heat. For runs longer than a few meters or for high-density strips, plan for an aluminum channel or another heat-dissipating surface. The strip will last longer and stay brighter.

Size the Power Supply Correctly

Calculate total wattage, then add a safety margin. A common rule of thumb is to size the driver at 1.2 times the strip's rated load. Running a driver at 100% capacity generates heat and shortens its life.

Respect Voltage Drop

Even on 24V strips, brightness can sag at the end of a long run. If the layout exceeds the manufacturer's recommended feed distance, split the run and power it from both ends or use multiple feeds.

Prepare the Surface

The best adhesive backing will fail on dust, oil, or a cold substrate. Clean the mounting surface with alcohol, allow it to dry, and press the strip firmly for the full contact time recommended by the tape manufacturer. In commercial work, mechanical clips or aluminum extrusions are often worth the extra cost.

Treat Every Cut and Joint as a Failure Point
